In general, the categories that see the most business on eBay are:

•    Computers & Networking
•    Consumer Electronics
•    Cell Phones & PDAs

The other categories do have plenty of activity, but those three in particular I have had the best success in selling a large quantity of items and always having plenty of demand for my products.

If you have a specialty in a category such as Crafts or Jewelry, then by all means go ahead and fully investigate if it would be worth it for you to embark on an eBay business in your specialty.

Most important, at this stage you need to fully look through all categories and try to narrow down your options to a couple of categories and items that you are not only interested in selling, but show enough profit for you to be able to make money off of them consistently.  For the next few pages, I am going to go over how you would go about making money selling cell phone accessories on eBay.

Why sell cell phone accessories?

•    Practically every individual in the United States over the age of 16 owns a cell phone
•    The overhead cost is low
•    The profit margins are high
•    Plenty of wholesalers to choose from
•    Plenty of different accessories to sell

I could come up with many more reasons, but those are what immediately stuck out to me.  You really have to think this question before planning what category you are going to sell in, “What does everyone use and need?”  If you can correctly place yourself in a market that millions of people buy products in, you can position yourself to make a lot of money!
 
Just think, everyone that buys a cell phone at one point or another will need a battery, case, headset, car charger, and even a faceplate.  These types of products cost pennies for the suppliers to make and can sell on eBay for as much as $20 dollars or more.  The result is the supplier (person who created the product) makes a lot of money, the distributor makes plenty of money, and you (the retailer) makes plenty of money.  Everyone is happy!  If you were to choose an industry such as Dell Laptops, how would you make money?  You really wouldn’t because you’d never be able to get the laptops at a wholesale deal like you would cell phone accessories.

In order to start selling on eBay, you must be able to enter a working checking account and credit card.  The reason for this is eBay likes to know the actual person that is registering belongs to that identity.  Also, eBay charges what is called “seller fees” and wants to be sure you have a method of paying your seller fees before allowing you to sell on their marketplace.  For the most part, you don’t need to worry about eBay ever charging your credit card or checking account because if you’re like most sellers out there you will simply just pay the fees with your PayPal account.

The only thing I’d like to touch on more about registering your eBay account is picking a username that is unique and will suit what you’re doing on eBay.  If you plan on selling DVD’s, a name like “TopDVDBargains” would suit you well instead of “ChrisMcMan.”  We’ll get into later why this is important, but trust me it’s important to look as much as you can like an actual business.

Okay, the next item that is imperative you register is a PayPal account.  Last time I read a report it estimated that 90% of all transactions are now handled through PayPal.  Few people use cashier’s checks and money orders anymore due to how much effort and time it takes for the seller to receive the payment.  With PayPal, a buyer can pay you the same day and receive his item usually within three business days.  PayPal was actually bought out by eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.   The acquisition made it possible for eBay to cut down on a good amount of fraud and completely control their payment interface in a way that makes everything much more efficient.
