Creating Your eBay Identity

Setting up your eBay identity is very critical and important.  If you do not have an eBay account currently, you will need a couple of items to get started.

    First off, click “Register.”

After clicking “Register” you will be brought to a page where you have to enter in various information such as your Name, Address, City, State, Zip Code, Country, Telephone Number, E-Mail, User ID, and a password.

In order to start selling on eBay, you must be able to enter a working checking account and credit card.  The reason for this is eBay likes to know the actual person that is registering belongs to that identity.  Also, eBay charges what is called “seller fees” and wants to be sure you have a method of paying your seller fees before allowing you to sell on their marketplace.  For the most part, you don’t need to worry about eBay ever charging your credit card or checking account because if you’re like most sellers out there you will simply just pay the fees with your PayPal account.

The only thing I’d like to touch on more about registering your eBay account is picking a username that is unique and will suit what you’re doing on eBay.  If you plan on selling DVD’s, a name like “TopDVDBargains” would suit you well instead of “ChrisMcMan.”  We’ll get into later why this is important, but trust me it’s important to look as much as you can like an actual business.

Okay, the next item that is imperative you register is a PayPal account.  Last time I read a report it estimated that 90% of all transactions are now handled through PayPal.  Few people use cashier’s checks and money orders anymore due to how much effort and time it takes for the seller to receive the payment.  With PayPal, a buyer can pay you the same day and receive his item usually within three business days.  PayPal was actually bought out by eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.   The acquisition made it possible for eBay to cut down on a good amount of fraud and completely control their payment interface in a way that makes everything much more efficient.

Similar to the way you registered for eBay, you will register for PayPal.  When you first click the “Register” link on PayPal.com you will see a number of options.

Be sure to choose “Business Owner” account.  Doing so will allow you to accept all types of payments and receive them for a lower fee then a casual user.  I can’t even begin to tell you how much money in PayPal fees I have saved by picking a business owner account.  Don’t worry if you do not have a registered business name, it’s not necessary and PayPal doesn’t mind using a fictitious (made up) business name.  If you’re last name is Huckle, a good name might be “Huckle Enterprises.”

You will need to fill in your full name, address, email, business name, and an email to receive all the customer service information.  In addition you will need to supply an e-mail and your checking account information.  PayPal will actually send two small deposits to your checking account before verifying you in their system.  After sixty days of being with PayPal, they will allow for you to request for a debit card in which you can withdraw straight from your PayPal balance whenever you want to at any ATM across America.  I use this card everyday and absolutely love it, the card works the exact same way as your bank debit card would from your bank.
